8A Solving the Problem

The opportunity I have selected is helping first year college students develop and maintain a balanced lifestyle. A balanced lifestyle is one that includes aspects such as: diet, time management (time spent studying vs time spent socializing), rest, fitness, mental health, emotional balance, and work ethic. Often times, students excel in a few of these areas coming into college but struggle to maintain healthy balance of all of these aspects. This can lead to imbalanced lifestyle which could be detrimental in the future. There becomes a need of helping students find a good balance in these different areas in order to help achieve a healthy lifestyle.

In an article by Little Things Matter, they talk about how personal accountability about personal aspects (goals, health, time management, etc) is crucial for life advancement. (littlethingsmatter.com) I believe if there was a way to take many of the aspects of a balanced lifestyle and help students remain accountable for these aspects, it would be very beneficial. That is where my solution comes in.

I want to create an app that helps students manage a balanced lifestyle. This app would help students track the different aspects of a balanced lifestyle and help students remain accountable of keeping this balance on a daily basis. The app would hypothetically include tools such as: fitness tracker, caloric calculations, time awareness capabilities to track progress of a work life balance, and school resources for mental health (if needed). It would help students track time spent socializing vs studying or sleeping.  This is to promote balance and a holistic lifestyle. It could help guide students who are trying to adjust to college life. It would provide ways for the students to find resources on campus, social events, and other connections. It would encourage students and hold them accountable to meet daily goals so they can successfully experience life while maintaining a balanced lifestyle.

  1. You did an amazing job with this post. I love the idea of an app that would help people balance their lives. If you turn this idea into a functioning app I would definitely use it. I feel balance is very important in life, and that I need more of it. If I had to give you any feedback, then it would be to vary the beginning words of your sentences. You used the word “It” as the first word of your sentence for three straight sentences in your third paragraph.

  2. I love the idea of this. My freshman year, I didn't have the best balance when it came to health and diet. I did what I could but it was no where near where I was back home. If I had this app my freshman year, I know it would have made a major difference.

    Good job

  3. Avery,
I love this idea! You should check out the app life cycle, it has some of the basics of what you were mentioning such as tracking where you are spending your time, but I love how this would be focused on students to help them be accountable for their time. I feel like I could definitely use something like this.
